The Kangaroo Island Ligurian Honey Bees are the world's only remaining pure genetic strain of honey bees, protected by a special Act of Parliament passed in Adelaide in 1885 declaring Kangaroo Island a sanctuary , and still the world’s only honey bee sanctuary today.
The Ligurian honey bees are known internationally for their quietness and ease of handling and are referred to by the world's beekeepers as the “Gentle Ligurians,” which is a very important feature for handling and working with honey bees. Today Kangaroo Island's Ligurian queen bees are being eagerly sought after by Australian and the World's beekeepers, and are exported widely.
Now for the first time we can offer three special honeys: ‘Canola’, Creamed Honey and ‘Cappings Honey’ - the honey of all honeys, with its 96 extra ingredients the bees produce when they 'cap' and seal each 'frame' to protect the standard honey cells.
